Berkeley Cooperation

Since 2014, there has been a fruitful research cooperation with the Grid Integration Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in Berkeley, California. LBNL is a globally leading energy research facility that conducts research on behalf of the United States Department of Energy and is operated under the University of California system. We regularly post offers for internships and Master’s thesis projects at LBNL on the Chair’s News page. Tobias Brandt (Ph.D. student, January 2014 – June 2014)

Tobias’ research project in Berkeley focused on Microgrids and how a Microgrid at a training facility of the U.S. Armed Forces can be implemented and optimally operated. His work was published in the following papers:

Sebastian Wagner (Ph.D. student, July 2014 – December 2014)

During his time in Berkeley, Sebastian contributed to the development of DER-CAM. DER-CAM is a software product that optimizes investments into Microgrids as well as the day-to-day operations of the implemented Microgrids.

 

Anna Schönbein (Master’s student, July 2015 – December 2015)

For her Master’s thesis, Anna is working in Berkeley on the development of mechanisms that enable the operation of a Microgrid with different stakeholders, such as one would find in a residential area. Her project is supported by the DAAD’s FITweltweit program as well as the Energiereporter campaign of the Stiftung Energie & Klimaschutz Baden-Württemberg, for which she regularly posts insightful video reports.

 

Friedrich Ewald (Master’s student, October 2015 – March 2016)

For the Master’s project as part of his M.Sc. in Computer Science, Friedrich conducts an internship at LBNL during which he supports the ongoing development of DER-CAM.

 

Marie-Louise Arlt (Ph.D. student, since 01/2017)

During her stay at the LBNL, Marie-Louise Arlt is researching the contribution of microgrids in the form of system services to distribution networks, for which she works on and with DER-CAM. Publications that have emerged in this course are:
